Sunday School

At First Congregational United Church of Christ we have two primary goals through which all of our children's ministries flow:  First, that every child in our ministries knows that they are deeply and wonderfully loved by God.  Second, that each child knows that their church loves them and stands by them no matter what as children and throughout their lives.  We never stop learning about God and it is often our children who have some of the most profound insights!

Our wonderful Nursery, for our infant – 2 year olds, is open every Sunday from 9:30 a.m. until the end of the worship service.  Our nursery room has toys galore and two loving staff members waiting to greet your little one.

Pre-school Sunday school is for our 3 year old – Kindergarten children.  We use a delightful new curriculum called Godly Play. It is a Montessori-based learning paradigm where children engage and explore their faith through their own wonder and curiosity. The lessons are based around storytelling, exploration play, and engaging their questions.

Elementary Sunday school is divided into two classes -- the 1st – 2nd graders and the 3rd – 5th graders.  Both classes use a rotation curriculum based on multiple intelligences.  One particular Bible story is taught per month.  Each week the story is presented in one of five ways through:  Arts and Crafts, Storytelling/Drama, Games, Music, or Science.  These two classes rotate between room 203 and the Chapel.  One of the two instructors for each class will meet the children in the parlor following the Children’s Conversation and escort them to the Chapel for a short gathering and then on to one of the classrooms.

Please note that for each of these programs, parents are required sign their children in and/or out of the classrooms as part of our safe church policies and a cell phone number provided in case of emergency.

6th Grade Class

The Sixth Grade Class, is a special class designed for the middle school sixth grader and is in preparation for our 7th and 8th grade confirmation program. This class follows the curriculum called 'Talk Sheets'. Each week the students explore a different topic of interest to the sixth grade age level, such as music, peer pressure, bullying, parents, television, etc. Each topic is also found in particular Bible verses which the students will research. They meet in their own room 504.

Confirmation Class

Our two-year Confirmation Program is divided into the following two groups: 7th grade "Disciples" and 8th grade "Apostles". We meet for conversation in the youth room on Sunday following the sermon, except the first Sunday of each month when the Confirmands are encouraged to participate in communion.

Both groups meet every Wednesday evening 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. to discuss and engage with faith on many levels, from sports to art to technology as well as beyond our walls to other congregations and religious traditions. We also include opportunities for our youth to meet and connect with adult mentors from our congregation during monthly events such as "Confirmation Conversations" and "Faith and Fun Nights".

Junior Fellowship

On the  last Sunday of each  month, our 4th-6th graders gather to enjoy field trips, games, movies, service projects, parties, and a light meal. It's a time for them to meet with friends and just be able to enjoy themselves!

Handbell Ensemble is a fun and unique way for children and teens to express themselves through music.  Each player is an essential part of the group, playing individual handbells within ensemble pieces.  Group members enjoy learning new musical skills and also making friends in this lively group.  Members do not need previous musical experience, there are bell parts for all skill levels.  Our church is blessed with a full set of White Chapel handbells which are used in rehearsals and during worship.  The Handbell Ensemble plays during select Sunday services, and their music is always enjoyed by the entire congregation.  Ensemble members agree that being a part of handbells is a great way to make friends, have fun, and learn something new.
